Creativation 2017 | Evolution of Distress Designer Challenge

March 2nd, 2017

In 2004 Tim Holtz and Ranger debuted Distress Ink in the craft industry, and for the past 13 years more innovative products have been added to this collection. For this year’s challenge Ranger and Tim Holtz wanted to celebrate this versatile line by showcasing all of the products that now make up its unique assortment. Instead of all the designers being given the same product as in previous years, they were all given various Distress products and their focus was to highlight the great features of their assigned product. All the artists were challenged to be as creative and unique as possible while using their assigned Distress product, all while still reflecting their own personal style. Check out what beautiful and inspiring pieces we received this year from our very talented group of designer artists!

Imagine the Possibilities…Tim Holtz Colors with Distress on Real Wood Paper by Et Cetera (ETC) Papers

September 23rd, 2016

Coloring on unique surfaces can often pose a challenge and today we want to showcase two different types of Distress coloring techniques on two different types of Et Cetera Papers wood veneer. Wood veneer is made from real wood with a smooth porous finish. Available in various finishes, we wanted to share how you can achieve vibrant watercolor effects on both light and dark surfaces.

Products used: Distress Crayons, Distress Markers, Distress Ink, Distress Waterbrush/Detailer, Distress Archival Ink, Mini Ink Blending Tool, Craft Sheet, Foam Tape, Et Cetera Papers Birch & Cherry Wood Veneer, Idea-ology Textile Surfaces, Idea-ology Quote Bands, Stampers Anonymous CMS136 Mini Blueprints, Stampers Anonymous Grid-blocks, Cardstock, and Jute.

We are working with basic watercoloring supplies including Distress Markers, Distress Crayons, Detailer Distress Waterbrush, Craft Sheet, and of course Wood Veneer.

To get started, stamp the images directly on the wood veneer using Archival Ink. Since we are watercoloring the images it’s important to stamp in a permanent ink.

Birch Wood Card

This first card features a lighter Birch Wood Veneer so we can use translucent dyes like Distress Markers.

Since this surface is very porous coloring directly on the wood with the marker can cause the ink to absorb immediately making it difficult to blend. The solution is to scribble the markers directly on to the craft sheet and use it as your palette.

Pick up the color with a waterbrush and watercolor directly on to the wood veneer. This applies a light wash of color allowing you to control the intensity and blend.

Continue layering various colors using this technique to create a wash of color. The translucent dyes highlight the grain of the wood veneer. Once finished, allow to dry completely.

Ink the edges with Distress Ink using a Mini Ink Blending Tool to frame our colorful masterpiece.

Cherry Wood Card

This second card features a darker Cherry Wood Veneer so we need to use pigments like Distress Crayons.

Even though this surface is very porous, coloring directly on the wood with the crayon is not a problem. The pigment will not absorb into the surface right away so it will allow us to blend with water.

Using the waterbrush, blend the crayon directly on to the wood veneer. This applies a vibrant wash of color creating intensity on the darker wood background.

Continue layering various colors using this technique to create a mix of color. The opaque pigment tones down the grain of the wood veneer. Once finished, allow to dry completely.

Ink the edges with Distress Ink using a Mini Ink Blending Tool to frame our colorful masterpiece.
