Tim Holtz Distress Paint Resist Card by Tami Bastiaans

In this tutorial, Tami Bastiaans shares how to use Tim Holtz Distress Paint as a resist with Distress Spray Stains to create this stunning, textured background—perfect for bold, inspiring cards like this one.

Instructions

Hello Makers! Today I have a card to share with you using a Distress Paint Resist technique. I usually use Distress paint for altering Idea-ology, but for today’s technique I used it for resisting Distress Stain. So I’m inviting you to come along, and let’s get making!

Step 1: Gather all the supplies.

Step 2: Using a Distress Blending Brush (or Blending Tool and Foam) load with a light amount of Rusty Hinge Distress Paint and apply to an A2 piece of Mixed Media Heavystock in various places. Do not cover the entire piece. Dry and clean off the stencil. Apply Crushed Olive Distress Paint the same way. Repeat with Speckled Egg Distress Paint.

Step 3: Once all three paint colors are dry and most of the paper is covered, as shown in photo, spray the entire piece with Scorched Timber Distress Spray Stain.

Step 4: You will see that the paint resists the stain. Let the stain sit for a few seconds and start to dry.

Step 5: With a clean paper towel, soak up any excess stain that is pooled on the paint. You can even lightly wipe it off the paint with a damp towel once the stain is completely dry. It will come right off the paint.

Step 6: The paint remained bright even thought it was sprayed with a dark Distress Stain. Distress Paint, once dry, is no longer water reactive so it really resists Inks, Stains and Oxides because they remain water reactive even when dry.

Step 7: On a piece of Mixed Media Heavystock, spray some Antique Linen Distress Stain. Dry.

Step 8: Stamp a sentiment and flowers from Mixed Media Set 24 onto the Mixed Media Heavystock piece using Ground Espresso Archival Ink. Dry, then watercolor the images and sentiment with Distress Inks in Rusty Hinge, Crushed Olive, and Speckled Egg.

Step 9: Trim the focal piece close to the stamped images and ink the edges with Scorched Timber Distress Ink. Mat with a piece of Distress Kraft Heavystock. Make an A2 card base from Distress Kraft Heavystock and trim the resist background slightly smaller to fit on the card base. Attach the focal piece in the center of the card with foam tape for dimension.
