Our next challenge runs from September 21 to October 18, 2017. Here you go….

#ShowUsYourMEdia | www.rangerink.com

Create a piece of art about your fears. What are you afraid of? How do you handle your fears? How do you overcome them?

Ah, fears. I try not to live my life in fear of things, but I am a PRO at worrying, and I do sometimes worry about my fears. We all have them, the key is to not let our fears paralyze or define us.  I don’t know what got into me, but I did two two-page spreads for this challenge (I hardly ever do 2-page spreads).

Fears Journal Spread

Supplies used:

  • Dina Wakley Media Journal
  • Dina Wakley Media Stamps: Splatter Girl
  • Dina Wakley Media Stencil: Mash Up
  • Dina Wakley Media Paint Brushes
  • Dina Wakley Media Scribble Sticks
  • Dina Wakley Media Acrylic Paint: Black, White, Magenta, Turquoise, Lemon, Cheddar
  • Ranger Mini Ink Blending Tool
  • Idea-ology by Tim Holtz Cling Foam Stamp: Block Upper
  • Fudeball Pen
  • Ranger Multi Medium
  • This page is about my artistic fears. I firmly believe that quality art is correlated to the quantity of art you make, and I am living proof that ANYONE can be an artist. I do sometimes worry that I’m not good, though, that I’m a giant art poser. Ha. Don’t we all feel that way a bit?

I started this page by loading up the Splatter Girl stamp with various colors of paint, and stamping her directly onto the watercolor pages in my journal (no gesso first, can you believe it?). Then I painted free-hand silhouettes around the stamped images so the faces would be visible through the figures. I stamped the words with Tim’s Cling Foam alphabet stamps and my White acrylic paint. I used the black Scribble stick to outline the abstract figures and the Fudeball pen was perfect for the journaling, once the paint was all dry.

    Splatter Girl Spread

    Supplies used:

  • Dina Wakley Media Journal
  • Dina Wakley Media Stamps: Splatter Girl, Text and Scribbles
  • Dina Wakley Media Stencil: Shape Mashup, Swirling Dashes
  • Dina Wakley Media White Gesso
  • Dina Wakley Media Gel Medium
  • Dina Wakley Media Paintbrushes
  • Dina Wakley Media Scribble Sticks
  • Dina Wakley Media Acrylic Paint: Black, White, Magenta, Turquoise, Lemon, Cheddar, Medieval, Elephant
  • Ranger Mini Ink Blending Tool
  • Idea-ology by Tim Holtz Cling Tissue Wrap, Plain
  • Fudeball Pen
  • Ranger Multi Medium
  • This page started with a concept, “Invisibility.” I wanted to stamp the girl so that she got lighter and lighter with each iteration. Can you tell the colors change as the images spread across the page? This page is how I don’t want to be invisible, how I want to make a difference.

I started this page with loosely-painted colors on pre-gesso’d watercolor pages in my journal. While the backgrounds dried, I took a large piece of Tissue Wrap and stamped Splatter Girl on it with varying colors of acrylic paint (Black, Night, Medieval, and Elephant). When all the paint dried, I used my Gel Medium to glue the stamped Tissue Wrap onto the page. Then I added additional stenciling and some journaling with the Fudeball pen. I stamped the circle from Text and Scribbles with Black acrylic paint onto a painted piece of paper that was in my “art bits” box. I throw unfinished/ugly pieces and warmups into that box and use them as collage papers. They come in handy. I cut the circles out and glued them over the whole spread.

Here is our next challenge. It runs from August 17 to Sept 20, 2017.

You can’t wait for inspiration. You have to go after it with a club. ~Jack London
Inspiration exists, but it has to find you working. ~Pablo Picasso

Create a piece of art about what inspires you. Do you purposely seek inspiration, or do you let it come to you organically? What do you do when you’re not feeling inspired?

As I thought about this challenge, I realized there’s no one source of inspiration for me. I get inspiration from color, from nature, from other people’s art, from design, from patterns….everything is fair game and might set me off on a creative path. The key is living so that you notice what is around you!

My family and I just got back from a trip to Tokyo, Japan. We had a fabulous time, and wow, I came home feeling inspired! One of the many beautiful sights we saw was this huge field of water lilies in Ueno park. We gasped when we saw them. The flowers were enormous, about 8″ across, or bigger. The lilies covered an incredible amount of area. Stunning!

    #ShowUsYourMEdia | www.rangerink.com

    #ShowUsYourMEdia | www.rangerink.com

These lilies were on my mind when I started this challenge. Painting flowers has been popular in mixed media for awhile, and I always wanted to try it, but never felt moved to do it. After seeing the flowers in Japan, I knew I had to paint them! I did two pages in my journal. The first page, on the watercolor paper in the Dina Wakley Media journal, is directly inspired by the lilies. The second page, on a burlap page in the journal, was just an experiment to see what would happen if I painted flowers on it. I enjoyed playing so much that I even made two larger flower paintings, inspired by my journal pages!

    Supplies used:

  • Dina Wakley Media Journal
  • Dina Wakley Media Acrylic Paint in Lemon, Cheddar, White, Fuchsia, Night, Sky, Blush, Turquoise, Lime, Evergreen, Black
  • Dina Wakley Media Paint Brushes
  • Dina Wakley Media Scribble Sticks
  • Fudeball Black Pen

Here is our next challenge. It runs from July 20 to August 16, 2017.

If you wouldn’t say it to a friend, don’t say it to yourself. ~Jane Travis
Create a piece of art about the things you say to yourself. Are you positive? Negative? Both?

This challenge inspired me. As I have gotten older, I have found that I am kinder to myself. I still have my insecurities, my sadness. But my self-talk tends to be motivational. If I don’t give myself a pep talk, who will? I made several pages because once I got started, I couldn’t stop.

Here’s a little journaling tip. I always have a big drawer full of “art bits.” These are warm ups, pieces of art I don’t like or that just didn’t work, etc. When I sit down to journal and feel stumped for an idea, I dig through my “art bits” drawer and pull out pieces that appeal to me. I cut or tear them up and repurpose them for new pages. I used this process for all of the pages that I made for this challenge. The birds on the Media Board came from a box that I created in a class that I taught. I tore the box apart and used the panels as the focal point for the pages. The tag can from the “art bits” box, too. The woman that I cut in half was a pretty ugly drawing that I did five years ago. It’s out of proportion…I draw better now….but it looked kind of cool cut in half. The orange circles were from a painting that was downright ugly. When I cut the circles out, they were perfect for the page.

The backgrounds on the bird pages are almost entirely Scribble Stick, with the exception of the Cheddar color on the page with the Blackberry and Cheddar background, and the Turquoise paint I put through the Almost Ikat stencil on the face page.

Are you ready? I can’t wait to see your art.

We’re super excited to have Dina here at Ranger this week to launch her new #ShowUsYourMEdia monthly art challenge! Keep reading below to hear from Dina more about the challenge, participation, and what this challenge means to her!

Are you ready to go on a personal art journey with me?

I started keeping a journal in 1979. My first entry was the day of my grandmother’s funeral. I wrote it in pencil, and later my dad told me I should write in pen, so my thoughts would have more permanence. That day was the start of my life-long belief in journaling, in writing yourself down, in making your mark on the world.

When I discovered mixed-media and art journaling in 2004, it was a natural fit. I love art. I love journaling. The marriage of those things is pure joy.
I want to put the “me” back in mixed media. All art is personal, whether it be a card or an art journal page or a painting. Join me as we begin a series of monthly challenges and prompts that will fuel your creative spirit and help you delve into the ME of MEdia.
