Instructions

(1) Cut one eight inch by ten inch rectangle of vintage sheet music. Spray the paper with Sunflower Sparkle Perfect Pearl Mist and set aside to dry.

(2) Cut or tear four eight inch by ten inch rectangles of unbleached muslin.

(3) Cover your work surface with newspaper to prepare for coloring the muslin with Color Wash. It’s a good idea to wear a smock or apron to protect your clothing as well. Working on the Non-Stick Craft Sheet atop the newspaper, spritz the muslin with water and then lightly spray the various colors of Color Wash onto the fabric. Spritz some areas with more water to create lighter tones and colors. Rinse the muslin under a faucet to remove color until you achieve the level of color you desire. Wring out fabric then roll the muslin in a paper towel to remove any excess water. For this project, four pieces of muslin were colored using the following Color Wash combinations:
a. Cranberry, Wild Plum and Red Pepper
b. Cranberry and Wild Plum
c. Wild Plum, Purple Twilight and Stream
d. Sunset Orange and Butterscotch

(4) Set the dyed fabrics out in the sun to dry or speed the drying process by using a clothes dryer for ten minutes at the highest setting.

(5) Working on the Non-Stick Craft Sheet, spritz a twelve inch length of white silk ribbon with water and then lightly spray with Wild Plum Color Wash. Rinse with water to remove color until you achieve the level of color you desire. Set aside to dry.

(6) Once the dyed fabric and ribbon is completely dry, iron to remove wrinkles.

(7) Ink numbers stamp with Perfect Medium and stamp in a random pattern over the surface of “fabric a” (Cranberry, Wild Plum, Red Pepper). Brush over the stamped images with Grape Fizz and Pink Gumball Perfect Pearl Pigment Powders. Very lightly spritz with water from a Mini Mister to set the powders.

(8) Ink the CH Studio Foam Polka-Dot stamp with Perfect Medium and stamp in a random pattern over the surface of “fabric d” (Sunset Orange and Butterscotch). Brush over the stamped images with Mandarin Perfect Pearls Pigment Powder. Very lightly spritz with water from a Mini Mister to set the powders.

(9) Make two copies of the heart template. One you will use for reference and one you will be cutting up in order to trace the pattern onto your fabric.

(10) Stack the dyed fabric pieces and sheet music rectangle right sides up as follows and pin together with straight pins:
Layer 1 – fabric a: Cranberry, Wild Plum, Red Pepper with Number stamps
Layer 2 – fabric b: Cranberry and Wild Plum
Layer 3 – fabric c: Wild Plum, Purple Twilight and Stream
Layer 4 – fabric d: Sunset Orange and Butterscotch with Polka-Dot stamps
Layer 5 – sheet music

(11) Cut out the heart and trace it with a chalk pencil onto the center of the fabric stack.

(12) Use a sewing machine to sew around the traced shape twice. Use a lower speed on your machine and slowly turn the fabric stack.

(13) Continue by cutting out each heart segment from the template copy and tracing them onto the fabric stack with chalk pencil. Sew along all the segment lines with the sewing machine.

(14) Once the sewing is complete cut out the heart about a quarter-inch from the sewn outline.

(15) Use small sharp scissors to cut away inside the sewn lines of the different sections of the heart. Cut down to a different layer in each section according to the template. Be sure to cut through only one layer at a time.

(16) Use white embroidery thread and a needle to sew shirt buttons and random straight stitches in Layer 3 – fabric c.

(17) Hand sew a length of vintage lace trim along the outside edge of the left side of the heart.

(18) Hand sew the dyed silk ribbon along the outside edge of the right side of the heart folding the ribbon and adding tiny seed beads as you go.

(19) Ink the magnetic poetry word with Perfect Medium and brush on Pink Gumball Perfect Pearls Pigment Powders. Spritz with water in a Mini Mister to set the powders. Use CH Studio Matte Multi-Medium to adhere the words to the center of heart on the sheet music section.

(20) Adhere a background sheet with a decorative border to an eight inch by ten inch piece of cardboard. For this project, I used a title page from a vintage music book.

(21) Adhere the completed heart to the center of the background page and secure in the frame to complete.
