49 and Market Irresistible Curiosities Journal Page by Jessica Mikels

Step into a world of whimsy with this Irresistible Curiosities journal page by Jessica Mikels! Layered with soft ink blending, textured florals, and delicate ephemera, this dreamy, storybook-inspired design shows how simple techniques can create beautiful depth and dimension. In this tutorial, you’ll see how blending inks, adding texture, and layering elements come together effortlessly.

Instructions

Bring a touch of whimsy and texture to your art journaling with this layered mixed media page using the beautiful Irresistible Curiosities collection from 49 & Market. In this tutorial, we’ll build depth with soft ink blending, textured flowers, and delicate ephemera to create a dreamy, storybook-inspired design.

Step 1: Select the polka dots and leafy elements from the 49 & Market Vicki Boutin Irresistible Curiosities Rub-On Transfers. Begin in the center of your page and gradually work outward, layering the designs both above and below the focal area. To add a bit of visual interest, incorporate some of the larger numerals by rubbing them on vertically throughout the design.

Step 2: Apply 49 & Market Dye Ink in Key Lime in a loose triangle across the page. These areas will become your focal points. Begin with heavier blending in the center of each area, then soften the color as you move outward. Next, blend Rainforest directly into the center of the Key Lime for added depth. Finally, lightly blend Twilight around the outer edges where the other two colors fade to create the illusion of a soft, mystical fog. Blend Cold Brew to the edges for depth. Lightly spritz the page with the Tim Holtz Distress Sprayer and allow it to dry.

Step 3: Using a palette knife, mix Ranger Transparent Matte Texture Paste with 49 & Market re-inkers in Strawberry, Doll Face, and Sunrise. Pick up a pea-sized amount of paste with the tip of the palette knife and apply it lightly to the page at the top, then press down more firmly as you move downward. This motion creates a petal-like texture. Repeat the process to form clusters of flowers around the page.

Step 4: From the 49 & Market Vicki Boutin Irresistible Curiosities Laser Cut Foliage and Laser Cut Elements, begin layering foliage in the center and around the areas where you blended the ink. Add ladybugs, butterflies and tiny mushrooms to your focal points for a whimsical touch. Finish by splattering Dylusions Flip Cap Paint in White Linen over these areas for added texture and movement.

Step 5: Ink blend 49 & Market Twilight and Cold Brew onto an Irresistible Curiosities die-cut frame. Lightly spritz with water to create a subtle distressed effect. Adhere the frame to your page, allowing the layered ephemera to sit slightly on top of the frame for dimension.

Step 6: Clip a small piece of Tim Holtz Mummy Cloth and apply Cold Brew ink to tint it. Gently pull the cloth apart to create a distressed, gauzy texture, then tuck and adhere it behind the layered ephemera.

Step 7: Using a paintbrush, softly blend Cold Brew ink beneath the butterflies and ladybugs to create subtle shadows and help them appear more dimensional on the page.

Step 8: To finish, apply Ranger Glossy Accents to the ladybugs, mushrooms, and pocket watch for a touch of shine and extra detail.

This page is a wonderful example of how simple techniques like ink blending, texture paste, and layered ephemera can come together to create a rich, dimensional design. I hope this tutorial inspires you to experiment with your supplies and add a little curiosity and magic to your next creative project.
