Ink Pad Reinkers

How do I use an Ink Pad Reinker?

Reinkers are primarily used to reink or refresh a coordinating ink pad to extend the life of the pad. Ranger manufactures reinkers for all ink pads including Tim Holtz Distress® and Distress® Oxide®, Archival Ink®, Dyan Reaveley, Dina Wakley MEdia, Simon Hurley create., 49 and Market.  To reink any type of ink pad you simply add a few drops of ink from the reinker bottle onto the stamp pad and spread.

What else can I use my Ranger Reinkers for?

Reinkers are way more versatile than most people realize — they’re not just for your ink pads. Reinkers are basically little bottles of pure creative potential.  Creative crafters and mixed media artists have discovered many other ways to use reinkers in addition to refreshing their favorite ink pads.

Watercoloring is a favorite technique for reinkers- pour a few drops into a palette to paint, watercolor, or splatter with.  Create custom-colored mediums by mixing a few drops into other mediums such as texture paste, clay or resin to colorize and/or to marbleize.

Another favorite ways to use craft reinkers is to create a custom ink pad using one of our DIY Ink Pads. Creating a unique pad has endless options - it can be a custom blend, an ombre pad, a rainbow pad, or more.  Simply choose your colors and your pattern, apply a few drops and spread with a craft scrapper or squeegee.

FAQs

How do I re-ink a Ranger ink pad, and can I use any re-inker on any pad?

Reinkers refresh your ink pads to extend their life, but you must match the re-inker to the pad type and color. Distress with Distress, Oxide with Oxide, Archival with Archival, and so on. Different formulations (dye, dye-pigment, permanent) don’t mix. To re-ink, add a few drops to the pad, spread evenly with a craft scraper or old card, let it absorb, and add more if needed. Don’t over-saturate because a little goes a long way.

What else can I use re-inkers for besides refreshing ink pads?

Reinkers are surprisingly versatile! Try getting creative with the techniques listed below:

  1. Watercolor washes – drop on wet paper or a palette.
  2. Splatter effects – flick from a brush.
  3. Tinting mediums – mix into texture paste, gesso, or resin.
  4. Custom ink pads – create ombré, rainbow, or blended DIY Ink Pads.
  5. Direct-to-surface dripping – for abstract backgrounds.

They turn a maintenance product into a creative tool, even if you don’t own a pad yet.

What is the difference between Distress Re-Inkers, Distress Oxide Re-Inkers, and Archival Re-Inkers?
  • Distress Reinkers: water-reactive dye inks, blendable and perfect for that vintage, worn look.
  • Distress Oxide Reinkers: dye-pigment hybrid, creates the signature chalky oxidized effect when water is added.
  • Archival Reinkers: permanent, waterproof, acid-free; once dry, they won’t move.

Use Distress Ink for reactive blending, OxideInk for oxidized two-tone effects, and Archival when you need permanence or water-resistance.

How often should I re-ink my stamp pad, and how do I know when it needs re-inking?

Signs your pad needs ink: images look faded, blending is streaky, or the pad surface looks dry or lighter than usual. Heavy users may re-ink more often than casual crafters. Don’t wait until it’s completely dry, and don’t flood it, a few drops at a time is best.
