It’s cold and blustery here, and I’m dreaming of the ocean. In this tutorial, I’m sharing how to capture the magic of a sunset using gloss and acrylic and the new Fly Away stamp set. Learn how to create a crisp masked frame, blend war gloss with cool acrylics, and layer collage elements for a perfect focal point.

Step 1: Make a rectangle or square with washi or pink tape on one of the pages. Don’t
press too hard on the tape as when you pull it up, it can pull up some of the paper with it (and likely will). It’s not too much of a problem, but something to be aware of, and you can of course skip this step and draw a rectangle instead.

Step 2: Cover the inside of the washi tape rectangle w/ a thin layer of white gesso. It
doesn’t need to be perfect or fill the whole area.

Step 3: Place a stencil on the page and spray a colored gloss through it. Here, Cheddar was used.

Step 4: Once the gloss is dry, swipe a couple of acrylic paints across the bottom with a scraper or an old gift card. Use a color that contrasts with the color of the gloss you chose. Here, Turquoise and Marine were used.

Step 5: Stamp some flying birds across the top of the scene with black archival ink. The color combination along with the bird gives the idea of a sunset over the ocean.

Step 6: Once dry, peel away the tape to reveal your painting. Add a focal point with layers of collage tissue, transparencies, stamped images, and a phrase. Use Media glue to adhere them to the page. Finally, add some gloss splatters to complete the scene.
