Craft Cutting Dies

Cutting dies are popular among card makers, paper crafters, and scrap bookers.  Dies are used to add dimension and decorative elements to many different paper craft projects including cards, journal pages, planner embellishments and more.  Craft Dies are even great to create shapes and phrases for decorating layouts or making kids craft projects. We offer various types of cutting dies under the Tim Holtz® Alterations by Sizzix Brand as well as Wendy Vecchi MAKE ART Stamp, Die and Stencil Sets.

How to Use Craft Dies

When using dies for a craft project you will first need a die-cutting or embossing machine, such as the Tim Holtz® Sizzix® Vagabond 2.  These machines vary in brand, size and price point and can be automatic or hand cranked in nature.  Once you have a die cutting machine you need to choose the style, shape, and texture you are looking to achieve on your project as well as the surface that you wish to begin with.

FAQs

Should I shop cutting dies on their own or pair them with coordinating stamp or stencil products?

It depends on the die. Some cutting dies are designed to stand on their own and don't have a coordinating stamp set. Others are part of a stamp and die set, where the die cuts the exact shape of the stamped image, which makes coloring and layering much cleaner. When a coordinating stamp set exists, shopping them together is worth it. When the die works independently, you don't need to pair it with anything.

Are these cutting dies better for intricate details or everyday crafting basics?

This collection has both. Some dies are designed for detailed, decorative work,  florals, ornate frames, fine lettering. Others are straightforward shapes and strips that you'll reach for on almost every project. A good way to build your collection is to start with the versatile basics and add the detailed statement pieces as your projects call for them.

Which cutting dies should I shop for cardmaking and paper crafting projects?

It depends on what you're making. For cards, look for dies that cut sentiment strips, frames, and layered shapes; these give you clean, finished edges without needing to be cut by hand. For scrapbook layouts and journal pages, border dyes and geometric shapes are really popular for adding structure. For mixed media and dimensional projects, look for dies that cut detailed motifs, labels, or decorative elements you can layer and build with.
