FAQs

What is the difference between a stencil, a mask, and a layering stencil?

A stencil is a sheet with cut-out shapes that lets ink, paint, or texture pass through the openings, creating the design on your surface. A mask works in the opposite way: it’s a solid shape you place on your project, then apply color around it so that when you lift the mask, the area underneath stays untouched. Layering stencils are multi-piece sets designed to be used in sequence with different colors, building up dimension and creating complex, multi-colored designs that look far more intricate than a single stencil could achieve.

What products can I use with Ranger stencils — ink, paint, spray, or paste?
  • Ink Pads: soft, blended backgrounds with brushes or foam applicators.
  • Sprays: full color coverage with slightly organic edges, or highlighted accents with shimmer.
  • Acrylic Paint: bold, opaque patterns with visible texture.
  • Texture Paste: raised, dimensional designs you can feel. Can layer inks or paints over it.
  • Embossing Paste/Gel Medium: smooth, glossy, dimensional effects you can colorize.
How do I clean stencils?

To clean your stencils, wash them immediately after use with water and a soft cloth or baby wipe. If paste has dried on the stencil, soak it in warm soapy water to loosen it, ts ideal to avoid letting paint or paste dry on the stencil.

How are the designer stencil lines different — how do I choose between Dylusions, Simon Hurley, Dina Wakley, Tim Holtz, and Make-It stencils?

Ranger’s designer stencil lines each have a distinct style to match different creative needs, choose the one that inspires you for each project!
