Mixed Media Fourth of July Scrapbook Page by Jess Francisco

Make your little firecracker their own mixed media scrapbook page with this fun Fourth of July tutorial by Jess Francisco! Jess shows you how to pair Tim Holtz Distress® Oxide® Pads and Dina Wakley MEdia paints to create a spread that is bursting with American spirit.

Instructions

Step 1: Create a gorgeous wood grain effect by swiping your Distress Oxide ink pads directly against your cardstock. Apply more pressure along the outside edge and lighten your pressure as you move towards the center. Start with your lightest color and then layer darker shades on top. Add a little less of each darker color as you layer them together. The panel used for this 12x12 scrapbook layout is trimmed to approximately 8”x10”.

Step 2: Grab a piece of cardstock and the small brayer. Make short lines of alternating paint colors with Dina Wakley’s Marine and Ruby Acrylics Paints on the white cardstock. Using the brayer, roll over the paint to create stripes. Roll off the excess paint on a scrap piece of paper or cardstock and save this. You’ll need it for the next step!

Step 3: Once your painted backgrounds have dried, use the Flutter rubber cling stamp set to stamp multiple butterfly images over your ‘roll off’ paper. This will give the butterflies a little bit of color, but you’ll still be able to see all of their beautiful detailing. Use a pair of scissors to cut out each of the butterflies.

Step 4: Using the script image from the Entomology rubber cling stamp set, apply Distress Oxide ink in Hickory Smoke and stamp this on a white 12x12 piece of cardstock. This will be sticking out from under the layered butterfly section in the layout. You can also add small areas of the stamped image to other sections of the cardstock to give a more organic and natural feel to the layout.

Step 5: To apply the splattered effect to the layout, set aside any pieces you want the splatter to be on. On a scrap piece of plastic (or a palette, if you have one), squeeze out a little of the Dina Wakley White acrylic paint. Spritz the paint with the Distress Sprayer and swirl the paint and water together with your paintbrush. Hold the brush over the areas to be splattered and tap firmly on the brush to splatter the paint. Let this dry before moving on.

Step 6: Start layering your elements together! Place the wood grain background down first and adhere it to the white 12x12 cardstock. Next, attach the red and blue striped panel. If you’d like you can add a bit of distress to your panel with the Paper Distresser tool. Mat your photo on a coordinating piece of cardstock and layer that on top of the striped panel. Leave the edges free (place adhesive more towards the center of each element) so that you can tuck other things underneath as you build your layout.

Step 7: Choose your embellishments and layer them, along with the butterflies, on your layout. This is the part where you get to be creative and make this layout your own! Use the Big Chat sticker book to create your own title and your layout is ready for the scrapbook or a frame!

I have been creating for as long as I can remember, but I started my card making journey in 2015. I have learned so many techniques and added so many new products to my growing list of favorites. Now that I have a few years under my belt, I’m excited to share what I’ve learned with the crafting community! You can find me on social media as @acarddayswork or A Card Day’s Work
