Add Dimension and Texture to your Craft Projects as Easy as 1, 2, 3...

Embossing is quick and easy- all you need to get started is a selection of embossing powders, embossing ink pens, an embossing dabber or an embossing stamp pad and an embossing tool, we recommend the Ranger Heat It ™ Craft Tool.  Sprinkle your embossing powders on your project over your embossing medium of choice and then heat until it melts into a smooth shiny finish.  When heated, these amazing colors transition into a glossy or matte finish.

FAQs

What do you need to get started with heat embossing?

You don’t need much to start embossing, but a few essentials make it easy:

  • Embossing ink pad, pen, or dabber: the sticky ink that holds the powder
  • Embossing powders: start with clear (universal), plus one metallic (gold or silver) and one opaque (white, black or any color you choose!)
  • Embossing tool: like the Ranger Heat It Craft Tool

The basic workflow is: write or use dabber with embossing ink, sprinkle powder over the wet ink, tap off the excess, then heat until it melts into a smooth, raised finish

What is the difference between Ranger embossing powder finishes?

Ranger powders come in a variety of finishes, each creating a distinct look:

  • Opaque: solid, full-coverage color
  • Metallic: smooth reflective shine, no glitter
  • Tinsel: sparkly with visible glitter particles
  • Pearl: soft, pearlescent sheen
  • Super Fine: tiny granules for fine details
  • Glaze: dimensional, translucent-like raised surface
  • Mixed Media: chunky, textured blends for unique effects
  • Sticky: tacky surface for foils or glitter

Knowing which finish to pick ensures your stamped images come out exactly as you envision and helps beginners navigate the large color grid.

What ink do I use for heat embossing — embossing ink, Archival or Distress?

It depends on your workflow:

  • Embossing ink pads/dabbers – formulated to stay wet for powder to stick; comes in clear and tinted inks
  • Distress Embossing Ink – specially formulated clear ink for use with Distress Embossing Glaze or powders
  • Archival Ink – dries faster; great for layering colored powders or creating two-tone effects
Why does embossing powder stick where I don’t want it, and how can I prevent stray powder?

Stray powder happens because paper holds a static charge that attracts granules. To prevent this:

  1. Use a Ranger Anti-Static Pouch before stamping
  2. Brush stray powder off with a fine brush
  3. Tap or flick the paper gently to remove excess

These simple steps give a clean, professional finish and make embossing much less frustrating.
