Elegant Embossed Bookmarks by Lauren Bergold

As autumn approaches, when kids (and grown-ups) are heading back to school, handmade bookmarks are a fun and easy project. Follow along as Lauren Bergold uses a pretty palette of Ranger Embossing Powders to make beautiful bookmarks that will remind your favorite reader that you're thinking about them!

Instructions

I loved books even before I could read, and while I enjoy the convenience of electronic and audiobooks, it's hard to beat the appeal of a gorgeous leather-bound volume and a special bookmark to save one's place.

Step 1: Gather Materials: Ranger Embossing Powder in Cranberry, Steel, Terra Cotta, Magenta, Marigold and White; Ranger Clear Embossing Ink; Ranger Heat It Craft Tool; Simon Hurley create Floral Borders Stamp Set; Simon Hurley create Stark White Cardstock; Dina Wakley Media Kraft Cardstock.

Step 2: Trim a piece of Simon Hurley create Stark White Cardstock to 2.75 x 7.25". Use the magents from the Wendy Vecchi MAKE ART Stay-tion to secure the future bookmark and the grid to neatly align the small floral vine stamp from Simon Hurley's Floral Borders Rubber Stamp Set. Stamp with Ranger's Clear Emboss It Ink. (Note that the finished bookmark size will be 2.5 x 7" but when embossing edge-to-edge it's nice to start with a panel that's slightly larger.)

Step 3: Sprinkle with Ranger Cranberry Embossing Powder and use a Ranger Angled Brush to get rid of any stray granules. Return excess powder to the jar and use the Ranger Heat It Craft Tool to melt the powder. Allow the embossed area to cool before proceeding.

Step 7: Stamp the small floral vines from Step 1 again, and this time emboss with Marigold powder. If there's still a little bit of white left on the panel, stamp the large leaf once more, allowing it to go off the edge. Emboss with Steel embossing powder.

Step 8: Using the same stamps and sequence as Steps 2 though 7, stamp all of the Floral Borders stamps in clear embossing ink on a 2.75 x 7.25" piece of Dina Wakley Media Kraft Cardstock and emboss with white powder. (Note that when using a single shade of embossing powder, it's fine to stamp several levels simultaneously.)

Step 9: Assembly: Trim the white and kraft stamped panels to 2.5 x 7" and, if desired, round the corners. Use a Coffee Archival Ink Pad to lightly ink the edges. Adhere the two panels back to back using Wendy Vecchi MAKE ART Perfect Card Adhesive. Punch a hole about half an inch from the top of the bookmark and create a tassel using embroidery floss, ribbon or twine in a coordinating color. Optional: Machine stitch around the edges of the bookmark.

Step 10: Note that by starting out with a piece of cardstock twice as wide, you can easily execute all of the above steps and wind up with two bookmarks for the same amount of work. Thus you can keep one for yourself AND send one to your favorite reader, mature student, or lifelong learner.
