Metal Foil Steampunk Tag

By Candy Colwell

Instructions

The Basic Tag

1. Dry emboss the Subway Texture Fade on a Metal Foil Sheet. Attach the Metal Foil Sheet to a #10 Manila Tag. (You may attach the Metal Foil Sheet to the Manila Tag before embossing if you wish). Rub a Black Paint Dabber all over the surface of the foil, getting it down into the crevasses of the design. Use a paper towel or soft cloth and wipe away the excess black paint. Then begin dabbing the remaining paint to create more of a textured surface. You may repeat this process until you achieve the depth of black you desire. Heat dry. Lightly rub some Gold Paint from a Paint Dabber onto the raised areas of the metal with your index finger. Then lightly rub a bit of Juniper paint from a Juniper Paint Dabber onto the raised areas with your index finger, to create a patina look. Ink the edges of the tag with Black Soot Distress Ink or a Black Soot Distress Marker. Set aside.

The Hot Air Balloon and 5 Cents

2. Stamp the hot air balloon 4 times onto a piece of Manila Cardstock using Jet Black Archival Ink. Heat set. Then stamp the steampunk gentlemen, the filmstrip and the pen nibs, plus two extra of the pen nibs that are on either end of the stamp with Jet Black. (Those will be cut out and stacked on either end of the stamped pen nibs later).

3. Stamp the 5 cent circle onto Manila Cardstock using Peacock Feathers Distress Ink. Use a circle punch to cut out this image, leaving a portion of Manila Cardstock around the edges. Distress the cardstock with Vintage Photo on an Ink Blending Tool with foam and edge with Black Soot. Set aside.

4. Color the hot air balloon all the same, using Broken China Distress Ink on the top and Barn Door Distress Ink on the bottom. To do this, wipe those ink pads onto a Non Stick Craft Sheet and then pick up the color with a Detailer Water Brush; blending and shading the hot air balloon while adding more color.

5. To make the balloon dimensional: cut one complete hot air balloon and lay it to the side. Cut the other three balloons only-no basket attached, but reserve one basket to use later. Glue two of the balloons together, WRONG SIDES together. Then you will still have just one balloon only. Fold that balloon in half lengthwise and glue it to itself, WRONG SIDES together. Now fold the other balloon pieces that have been glued together in half lengthwise. Since the balloons are not symmetrical, you will have to trim the edges that don’t match up. Then ink the edges of the balloons with the brush tip of a Black Soot Distress Marker.

6. Now stack the balloons so you can see how they will end up. First with the complete hot air balloon on the bottom. Glue a Game Spinner on top of that balloon, leaving enough room at the top to tie a piece of ribbon around the Game Spinner. On top of the complete balloon will be just the folded but not glued shut hot air balloon. Place a piece of 1/4” Wonder Tape down the center fold of that balloon. Now take the remaining balloon that has been glued shut and trim down the outer edges so that when it is set inside the taped fold of the balloon below, the edges will not stick out past the other edges of the balloon. Reink those edges with a Black Soot Distress Marker. Now fit the folded edge of the top balloon down into the taped fold of the balloon below it. Run a piece of ¼” Wonder Tape down the center of the fold on the BACK side of the center balloon and lay the stacked balloons in place on top of the complete hot air balloon. Tie a piece of white ribbon colored with watered down Barn Door Distress Ink onto the Game Spinner. Gently pull the balloons up a little to make them dimensional. Set aside.

7. Color the steampunk gentlemen in the same way as the hot air balloon. The colors used are: Milled Lavender to create a flesh tone skin on the Manila Cardstock, Spun Sugar for the cheeks, Tumbled Glass for the shirts and Barn Door for the flower in the one gentleman’s jacket. Color 2 of the hot air balloon baskets and the area underneath the gentlemen with Scattered Straw.

8. Cut out the gentlemen, leaving a little edge of the Manila Cardstock edging and remove the one on the right away from the other two. Cut out the extra basket, leaving just a Manila Cardstock edge. Ink just the edge of the cardstock with a Black Soot Distress Marker.

9. Place the one gentleman on the hot air balloon and then add the basket over him to hide the bottom edge.

The Pen Nibs “ART” Filmstrip

10. Color around the pen nibs with Antique Linen using the waterbrush and the method above. Cut out around the pen nibs, leaving a little edge of the colorized Manila Cardstock. Run a Black Soot Distress Marker around the edges of the pen nibs. Set aside.

11. Color the filmstrip areas with Antique Linen. Cut out around filmstrip (leaving a small cardstock edge) and inside of the “windows” and edge with a Black Distress Marker.

12. Alcohol Ink a piece of clear packaging with Caramel and Ginger Alcohol Ink on the Alcohol Ink Tool with felt that will cover the “windows” of the filmstrip. Glue the packaging onto the backside of the filmstrip using Glossy Accents or the Wonder Tape. Adherethe filmstrip over the pen nibs using Pop it Shapes. Cover the exposed ends of the filmstrip with the two extra pen nibs that match the ones that will be beneath them. Glue into place with Glossy Accents. Dab a Gold Paint Dabber on the “ART” Alpha Parts Letters. Let dry. Glue them in place in the “windows” of the filmstrip with Glossy Accents.

To Finish…

13. Glue the two steampunk gentlemen in place on the tag. Glue the pen nibs “ART” filmstrip in place, hiding the bottom edge of the steampunk gentlemen. Glue the hot air balloon in place on the right side of the tag.

14. Die cut the gears out of plain Grungeboard and color them by dabbing Silver then Gold Paint Dabbers randomly over them. Heat set. Then add a touch of Juniper paint on them with your finger to give them a patina look. Glue the 5 cent circle in the center of the large gear. Add the Ideaology gears over the tops of the other Grungeboard gears and attach in place either by gluing or with Long Fasteners.
