A haunted garden in rich layers of inky color! Dominique Bennani created this gorgeous card using Tim Holtz Distress Spray Stains, Inks, Mica Stain, and more. With ink techniques and lots of layering, every detail comes together to create a beautifully eerie, dimensional design with just the right amount of shimmer.

October is the month of mysteries and scary stories! For this assignment, I have created a mystery haunted garden, using a few techniques with Ranger’s products.

Let’s gather all materials:
Distress Inks, Distress Mica stain, Distress Spray Stain, Distress Archival Inks, 2 to 3 sets of Stampers Anonymous stamps. One or two with scripts, Halloween sentiment scripts, foliage or flowers stamps and a large background stamp (take note: all colours and stamps choices are personal).

Step 1: On a non-stick sheet, apply Fossilized Amber and Mustard Seed Distress Ink, mist with water, then drag the 3"x4" watercolor cardstock into the inky mixture. Heat it. Use the spray bottle to create big water splatters. Let it dry or heat it. Repeat this step until your desired look is achieved. Repeat the same technique with Villainous Potion.
This technique is called “ink smooshing”.

Step 2: Stamp flowers, a halloween element and script with Distress Archival ink in Villainous Potion.
And stamp one script with Distress Archival Ink in Black Soot.
(Stampers Anonymous: CMS 348 Ornate and Laces for the black background; CMS 471 The Obscure; CMS 453 Exquisite)

Step 3: For the second background, use the same technique as in step 1.
Use the ink smooshing technique with Mustard Seed and Fossilized Amber Distress Inks on a 5”x3” piece of watercolor cardstock. Let it dry.
Add a touch of Distress Mica Stain in Harvest Moon onto the background using the same technique.

Step 4: Stamp Halloween script with Distress Archival Ink Black Soot, around the edges of that yellow background.
Once dried, glue down the main background onto that yellow background.
Place the two onto a piece of black heavystock for a thin black frame.

Step 5: With a brush, splatter Distress Mica Stain in Harvest Moon onto this assemblage.

Step 6: On the 4”x6” piece of black heavystock, stamp CMS348 Ornate and Laces with Distress Mica Stain in Harvest Moon.
To do this: apply the Mica onto a non-stick craft sheet. Let it dry for a few minutes or you can speed up by heating it with a heat gun (low temperature), just enough to evaporate a bit of the water.
Place the background stamp (CMS 348 Ornate and Laces) onto a stamping platform.
With a brayer apply the mixture of mica onto the stamp (if too dry, mist water onto the mixture. It will react with the inked stain). Before stamping, mist the stamp lightly with water, then stamp it. Repeat these steps until your desired result is obtained.

Step 7: This stamped black background is placed behind the main artwork.
And just like that …..you have a Halloween card! Yay!
Have a happy creative halloween! A lot of treats for you all :)

Bonjour! My name is Dominique, and I am from Montreal, Canada. For a while, I was a kids art teacher. I came across the stamping world about 30 years ago. Tim Holtz’s mixed media art universe further opened my horizon about 20 years ago. Ever since, I have been exploring and creating full time in my precious studio. I love creating with textured backgrounds, watercolors, with vintage vibes. My work aims to tell poetic stories. I have a passion for collecting tiny vintage antique objects. All this keeps me sane!
