Instructions 

Hello Makers! I recently made a seashore on an Idea-ology Reliquary Dome and in this tutorial I wanted to show how to use the same technique on a card. This technique is fun and a little messy, but so worth it. I’m inviting you to come along, and let’s get making!

Step 1: After you have gathered your supplies, Cut a piece of Watercolor Cardstock 3.25x8.25, that is ¼” shorter than a slimline card (9 3.5x8.5). Put some translucent Texture Paste on a media mat or something you can mix in. Add a few drops of Tumbled Glass Distress Paint and mix thoroughly.

Step 2: With the palette knife, spread the colored texture paste on the slimline watercolor paper in roughly the shape of a wave, leaving 2-3 inches on top for “sand” later on.

Step 3: Mix a few drops of Broken China Distress Paint to the previously colored texture paste. Mix Well. With the palette knife, spread the slightly darker colored texture paste on the slimline watercolor paper in roughly the same shape of a wave, leaving an inch or so of the lighter wave showing.

Step 4: Mix a few drops of Mermaid Lagoon Distress Paint to the previously colored texture paste. Mix well. With the palette knife, spread the darkest colored texture paste on the slimline watercolor paper in roughly the same shape of a wave, as the first two and pull the paste all the way to the bottom of the card front, leaving an inch or so of the medium wave showing.

Step 5: While the Texture Paste is drying, prepare the papers for the sentiment.

• Spray Pumice Stone Distress Stain onto a piece of Distress Woodgrain Cardstock and dry.
• Rub the Frayed Burlap Distress Ink Pad directly onto the woodgrain paper and the grain will appear. Dry.
• Put a few drops of Ripe Persimmon paint onto a media mat and spray with some water. Swipe some Distress Watercolor paper through it and dry.
• Cut the word VIBES out of the woodgrain paper using a large font (such as Alphanumeric Shadow Uppercase) and a smaller script summer from the Riper Persimmon paper from Handwritten Vacation.

Step 6: Now the Translucent Texture Paste should be dry. Put some Opaque Texture Paste onto a media mat or in a container and add a few drops of Picket Fence Distress Paint. Mix well.

Step 7: Using a palette knife tap the Opaque Texture Paste onto the border edges of each color of wave. Once some of the texture paste is on the wave, pounce a little more on top of it to make it look foamy. Don’t be too neat about this. Have fun adding sea foam to the waves. Let dry thoroughly.

Step 8: Now it is time to add some sand and cut some palm fronds.

• Put a bit of MicroGlaze on your finger and rub it over the dry sea foam. Do this carefully. You don’t want it to get onto the Watercolor Cardstock where you will want the sand. You just want to protect the seafoam from turning brown.
• Spray a tiny bit of Antique Linen and Brushed Corduroy. Spray lightly with water and dry. Wipe off any that gets on the foam.
• Cover the waves and foam with a paper towel and from high up, lightly spray Frayed Burlap Distress Stain so it makes tiny little dots on the sand. Set aside to dry.
• Put a couple of drops of Mowed Lawn and Rustic Wilderness Distress Paint onto a Media Mat and spray with water. Swipe a small piece of Distress Watercolor Cardstock through the paint and dry
• Cut out palm fronds or leaves with a die (such as the palm frond from Garden Greens as shown.)

Step 9: Time to assemble the card:

• Adhere the wave card front to a slimline card base. You can make one from Distress White Heavy stock by cutting a piece 7x8.5 and scoring at 7” side at 3.5.
• Adhere the woodgrain VIBES letters in the lower third of the card.
• Put a drop of Scorched Timber Distress Paint onto a Media Mat. Dip the end of a small stylus into the paint and then tap it onto the woodgrain letters to mimic a nail hole. Repeat this in places where the letter would have had a nail holding it in place. Let dry.
• Attach the Ripe Persimmon colored Handwritten word Summer across the word VIBES.

Step 10: Finish the card by adding the palm fronds in the top left corner of the card.

I hope this inspired you to want to try making your own ocean waves on a card or even in a small vignette or dome scene. It is fun to do because you don’t have to be precise. It looks great no matter what!
