Create a beautifully layered mixed media journal page with a junk journal vibe. Use torn papers, soft blending, and dimensional details. This step-by-step process focuses on building texture and cohesion while letting each element melt effortlessly into the background.

Step 1: Select a sheet from the From the Garden 6x8 paper pad with a complex design. A complex and layered pattern will boldly come though after the layers of mixed media applied to this project. Tear it into 5–6 pieces. Adhere several pieces along the edges of your journal page and place 1–2 pieces slightly off the focal area.

Step 2: Mix a small amount of Ranger Texture Paste Opaque Matte with 49 and Market Dye Ink in Mint Chill. To do this, press the ink pad onto a non-porous surface, then use a palette knife to blend in the texture paste. Once tinted, scrape the mixture onto the edges of the torn paper pieces. This helps the paper blend seamlessly into the journal page.

Step 3: Apply 49 and Market Dye Ink in Rainforest directly onto the Tim Holtz Mini Layering Stencil (Flames). Lightly spray the stencil with water using a Distress Sprayer for even distribution. Before placing it down, wipe away any excess ink or water from the edge of the stencil to avoid unwanted marks.

Step 4: Press the stencil onto the page and use a paper towel to absorb any excess ink that may bleed. Lift to reveal the print and lightly spray the stencil again to create a second-generation print. Focus on the white areas, but don’t be afraid to overlap slightly onto the patterned paper. Repeat this step for more prints if desired. For an extra layer of depth, use 49 and Market Dye Ink in Rainforest and Shamrock to stamp small text or script like the stamps found in Tim Holtz Stampers Anonymous Cling Mount Stamp French Garden.

Step 5: On a non-porous surface, partially blend Dina Wakley White Gesso with 49 and Market Dye Ink in Cappuccino. Do not fully mix, leave some white visible. Using a palette knife, spread the mixture across the page. Don’t be afraid to spread it on top of the pattern paper and mixture of Mint Chill and texture past. This will unify the pattern paper and stenciled background.

Step 6: Select ephemera pieces from the Die Cut Elements and distress the edges using the Tim Holtz Paper Distresser. Ink the edges with 49 and Market Dye Ink in Cappuccino. Incorporate elements that resemble journaling bits to achieve a junk journal feel. Staple a couple elements together. Add a couple of contrast strips of washi tape down the center of the journal as if securing the papers in place. Use Scrapbook Adhesive Squares to elevate selected pieces for added dimension.

Step 7: Add florals from the From the Garden Laser Cut Elements, tucking them behind the journal pieces to help separate them from the background. Gently curl the edges of the flowers by pinching them upward for added dimension. Do the same to the corners or the top of some of the journaling elements.

Step 8: Ink blend 49 and Market Dye Ink in Cappuccino around the edges of the journal page to frame the layout and add warmth and depth.

Step 9: Finish by splattering Dylusions White Paint diagonally across the page using a small paintbrush. Cover any areas or sentiments you want to keep clean before splattering.

By layering color, texture, and ephemera, you’ll achieve a rich, cohesive design full of depth and movement. Don’t be afraid to experiment and make it your own, fall in love with this junk journal mixed media spread!
