Earth Day Recycled Spring Pencil Holder by Teresa Natividad

Give everyday scraps a second life 🌎✨ This Earth Day project by Teresa Natividad turns recycled popsicle sticks and a toilet paper core into a fresh, spring-inspired pencil holder that’s as functional as it is beautiful.

Layered with color using Dina Wakley Media supplies and Dylusions Paints, then finished with stamped details from Simon Hurley create and Archival Inks, this project is a reminder that creativity and sustainability go hand in hand.

Celebrate Earth Day by creating something meaningful from what you already have!

Instructions

I unfortunately found myself ill for a few weeks last month. One of my symptoms was a sore throat and popsicles were my saving grace. I had the forethought to save my popsicle sticks as well as a toilet paper core to make this spring-themed pencil cup!

Step 1: Wash your popsicle sticks to remove any food residue. Set aside.

Step 2: Trace the toilet paper core onto a spare piece of cardboard and cut this out.

Step 3: Use the Dina Wakley MEdia Glue to attach the cardboard circle to one of the open sides of the core. Secure with Dina Wakley MEdia Canvas Tape.

Step 4: Apply Dina Wakley MEdia White Gesso to both the toilet paper core and the popsicle sticks. I also brushed some Gesso on the inside of the core.

Step 5: Next, use some paint to mimic a lawn. Squeeze some paint onto a palette. You can use one color or a combination of colors for your grass. I chose Dylusions Paint and Dylusions Shimmer Paint. Apply the paint onto the toilet paper core with an Ink Blending Tool. Use a pouncing motion for some texture. Let dry.

Step 6: Paint the popsicles white. Once the toilet paper core and the popsicle sticks are dry, glue popsicle sticks to the core about 1/2” apart with Dina Wakley MEdia Glue.

Step 7: Cut two strips of Simon Hurley create. Stark White Cardstock to ¼” wide.

Step 8: Curl with a brush (you can also use a pen, pencil, or other tool).

Step 9: Glue across the fence about ¼” to ½” from the top and bottom of the cup. Set this piece aside.

Step 10: Stamp selected butterflies and/or dragonflies from Simon Hurley create. Stamp Set Blooming Butterflies onto Simon Hurley create. Stark White Cardstock with your choice of Archival Ink.

Step 11: Die cut your images with the matching Simon Hurley create. Blooming Butterflies Etched Dies by Spellbinders.

Step 12: Take some of the die cuts and use a stylus and scoring board to make a crease between the body and the wings. Fold the wings to make them look dimensional.

Step 13: Arrange the butterflies and/or dragonflies on the fence to your liking and glue them on.

Step 14: Fill your cup with pens, pencils, markers, and any other tools of your choice!
