I love the versatility of mixed media tags. They come in a variety of sizes and I never get tired of all the fun projects I can make using tags. For today’s tutorial I am going to show you how I made this Mixed Media Hanging with the Homage to Frida Stamp Set by Dina Wakley.

Step 1: I began by gathering my supplies. I’m using a ribbon I had previously dyed using Dylusions Ink Sprays in Funky Fuschia, Calypso Teal and Rose Quartz.

Step 2: Using a plastic palette knife spread Opaque Texture Paste through the Tim Holtz Burlap Stencil. I love the added texture and find that less is more when it comes to the Texture Paste. I did not cover the entire tag but placed the stencil and paste in a few different spots on the tag.

Step 3: While the Texture Paste is drying, stamp the roses from the Homage to Friday Stamp Set randomly onto the blank Dylusions Journal Tape using the Mini Archival Inks in Majestic Violet, Vibrant Fuchsia and Paradise Teal. I also stamped an image of Frida, the heart and one of the sentiments from the set onto some scrap muslin fabric I had in my material stash.

Step 4: Loosely cut around the Frida image and the heart image using Tim Holtz scissors.

Step 5: Squeeze a drop of Dina Wakley Lapis and Blackberry paint onto the Craft Sheet. Using a very wet paint brush add some water to the paint and add a little color to the stamped images. Set those aside to dry.

Step 6: Check to make sure the Texture Paste is dry. Then add drops of Dina Wakley paint in Turquoise, Ocean and Lime to the Craft Sheet. Using the same method, add water to the paint and begin painting the tag ensuring that the Texture Paste is covered. Before beginning another color, take a paper towel and dab some of the paint off. Allow ample time for the paint to dry.

Step 7: Fold the tag in half. Add the stamped journal tape to the bottom of the tag on both sides.

Step 8: Add Dina Wakley Gel Medium using your finger to the back of all my stamped images and placed them on the tag. Since you will be stitching around all these images you don’t need to go too heavy with the Gel Medium. You really have to let this dry before you go onto the next step or your sewing machine will have wet gel medium on the needle and honestly, that’s just a hassle.

Step 9: Using a sewing machine, stitch around each of the stamped images a few times. Then fold the tag in half and stitch all the way around the tag.

Step 10: Use a Crop-A-Dile to punch a hole on the top of the tag and a few holes down at the bottom of the tag. I started with four but realized it looked much better with seven in total.

Step 11: Add the dyed ribbon to the top and the bottom of the tag. Because this ribbon was already in my stash I didn’t have enough for all seven holes. I improvised and added a scrap piece of fabric I had that matched perfectly.
