We are barreling towards a new year. This month, I want you to think about YES. What can you say YES to next year, that you would ordinarily shy away from?

#ShowUsYourMEdia | www.rangerink.com

I think one of the keys to saying yes is to go easy on yourself. Allow yourself to fail. To learn. To be a beginner. Yes is an attitude, really. It’s about a spirit of adventure and exploration. It’s about letting go of perfectionism and being in the moment.

Supplies used:

  • Dina Wakley Media Journal
  • Dina Wakley Media Collage Paper
  • Dina Wakley Media Gel Medium (to glue down Collage Tissue)
  • Dina Wakley Media Ultra Thick Gel Medium (to glue down heavier papers and collage items)
  • Dina Wakley Media Scribble Sticks
  • Dina Wakley Media Acrylic Paints: Blackberry, Marine, Black
  • Fudeball Pen
  • Dina Wakley Media Washi Tap
  • Dina Wakley Media Stamp: Soul and Heart
  • Dina Wakley Media Stencil: Medieval Crosses
  • Archival Ink: Jet Black
  • 3- #8 Tags
  • Stamping Cardstock
  • To start this spread, I did a quick wash of Sky paint across two pages. I painted some of the white-on-white collage papers with paints (to tint them) and let them dry. Then I collaged on both sides of the tags with stenciling, the tissues, tape, and stamped images. I used Washi Tape to tape the tags onto the page, with a hinge so they lift up and reveal journaling underneath. Tip: use your Gesso or Gel Medium lid for perfect stamped circles.

    Challenge Rules Recap

I want to put the “me” back in mixed media. All art is personal, whether it be a card or an art journal page or a painting. Join me as we begin a series of monthly challenges and prompts that will fuel your creative spirit and help you delve into the ME of MEdia.

    Challenge Rules

  • We will announce monthly challenges on the Ranger blog on the third Thursday of each month.

  • You can make anything you like—a card, an art journal page, a tag, a canvas, anything!
  • Interpret each challenge any way you like. You can be literal or you can use it as a springboard and see where it takes you. Let the challenge inspire you and stretch you.
  • Try to journal on your piece. Write your thoughts about each prompt. You can write a little or you can write a lot, but do your best to incorporate your thoughts and feelings into the piece.
  • When you complete a challenge, please share it on your blog and personal social media account(s) (Instagram/Facebook) with the tags #showusyourMEdia and #rangerink. When you share on your personal FB page, be sure to make the post public so that it shows up in our hashtag search. You can share in the art groups, too, but those posts don’t show up in the searches if the groups are closed or private.

November–the month of pie and gratitude. I love this quote by William Arthur Ward:

    #ShowUsYourMEdia | www.rangerink.com

“Feeling gratitude and not expressing it is like wrapping a present and not giving it.” William Arthur Ward.

I know that being grateful for even small, simple things, and EXPRESSING that gratitude, can change your life. Take time this month to record some of the things for which you feel gratitude.

    Supplies used:

  • Dina Wakley Media Journal
  • Dina Wakley Media Collage Paper: Faces, Backgrounds
  • Dina Wakley Media Gel Medium (to glue down Collage Tissue)
  • Dina Wakley Media Scribble Sticks
  • Dina Wakley Media Acrylic Paints: Magenta
  • Scraps from your “art bits” box
  • Fudeball Pen
  • Dylusions Paint Pen: White Linen

  • Notice that one of the supplies is “scraps from your art bits box.” I have a box in my studio full of painted papers, gel printed tags, half-done journal pages, etc. Nothing goes to waste here. If it’s colorful, I throw it in the “art bits” box. When I need a pop of color or some cool textures on a project, I dig through the box to find something. On the page below, the pieces I journaled on came from the box. They were a gel printed tag. The Turquoise half-circles came from the box (I cut them from a piece of painted watercolor paper), and the burlap and canvas also came from the box. If you keep a collection of art bits nearby, it simplifies collage and takes the pressure off you to create every piece for your project from scratch.
My journaling on this page highlights things I am grateful for. And I want to be sure to EXPRESS that gratitude verbally this month.

I had a couple of fun product releases this summer…new stamps and stencils, new collage tissues and new washi. Woo hoo. I want this month’s Show Us Your Media challenge to inspire you to crack open the packaging and USE your new goods. Seriously. Use it. We’ll make more.

    #ShowUsYourMEdia | www.rangerink.com

Paint (and any supply, really) is only wasted when it stays in the tube. Just make.

I made this journal page from my new washi and new tissues, and a new stamp image.

This page started with small mini collages that I made on loose cotton rag watercolor paper. I lightly painted the paper, and added tissues with Gel Medium. After I made the cards, I glued them back to back and taped them together to fold into a little accordion book. Then I mounted the book onto a kraft page in my journal. You can pull the book out and see both sides. To get the pops of yellow, I painted some of the burlap in the journal with Lemon paint. When it dried, I cut it into shapes and even hand-stitched on it with floss.

    Supplies used:

    • Dina Wakley Media Journal
    • Dina Wakley Media Washi Tape Set #3
    • Dina Wakley Media Collage Paper: Backgrounds
    • Dina Wakley Media Gel Medium
    • Dina Wakley Media Scribble Sticks
    • Dina Wakley Media Acrylic Paints: Ocean, Magenta, Lemon
    • Dina Wakley Media Cotton Rag Watercolor Paper
    • Ranger Archival Ink #0: Jet Black
    • Idea-ology by Tim Holtz Tiny Attacher (I loooove this tool)
    • Needle and Embroidery Floss

It is September. In Arizona, it’s still over 100 F, and I am always envious of those of you who actually get a Fall season. I hope you have lots of pSavelans to create this Autumn. Keep creating, keep sharing. We love, love, love seeing your work.

“Hardships often prepare ordinary people for an extraordinary destiny.” CS Lewis

What have you learned from your hardships? How have they changed you? Have they made you better? Explore this theme in your work this month.

I made this page on my Art Journaling Cruise (I taught on a cruise at the end of August). I went back today and added more journaling. I typically work this way–I create, and then add journaling later. It feels good just to focus on writing. Plus, you know your mediums are completely dry when you journal at a later date.

To make this page, I made an acrylic background. Then I used original Gel Medium to glue down the face. After it dried, I painted it in with my acrylic paint.

I got my own back. ~Maya Angelou

Create a piece of art about how you take care of yourself, stand up for yourself, or about how you don’t. Do you have your own back? If you don’t, who does?
Sometimes it’s hard to take care of ourselves. Where is the line between being selfish and filling our own cup? I struggle with that. All the obligations and “have-to’s” seem overwhelming. I have a hard time relaxing because I am always worried about the fires I’ve left unattended.

That is why I love scuba diving. When I’m under the water, it’s the only time I am not a ball of stress. Under the water the focus is breathing, and weightlessness. It’s truly like being in another world, and it’s amazing. My husband doesn’t enjoy diving, but I’ve been making time to get to the ocean anyway. I need it. This journal page is symbolic of how I’m getting to the ocean, making it a priority. It’s my form of having my own back.

Are you finding time this summer for any art? My schedule has been super, super busy, so I have to keep it simple lately. Even simple art is GREAT art, because it is art that is DONE. Remember one of my mantras…done is better than perfect! I am finding that to be so true this busy, hot summer.

    #ShowUsYourMEdia | www.rangerink.com

“And maybe that’s the bravest thing you can do. Let go of the concept of doing something right and remember that there are no mistakes, only discoveries.” ~Mati Rose

Create a piece of art about making discoveries. Are you too caught up in mistakes you might make? How can you overcome fears of mistakes? What discoveries have changed your life? How do you live with an attitude of daily discovery?
I always tell people that I am hard on myself in every area of my life, EXCEPT for art. If this isn’t fun, why do it? I love to make bad art because that means I am making discoveries. I might discover what works well together, or what doesn’t. I might discover a new color combination. No matter what, it’s not wasted time. It’s the discoveries that matter. It’s the spilling that matters. If you end up with good art (and you will, eventually), that’s just a bonus.
This is a page in my large Media Journal. It’s super simple–lay down a tag, mask around it three times. Fill in the voids with text and stamping. Add a focal point image. Done!!

Create a piece of art about your strength and how you overcome life’s trials. What has tried to bury you? How have you dug yourself out of it? How did you grow?

To create this page, I used a drawing/painting that I actually did last year. It came from a page spread I had torn apart. I routinely cannibalize my journals. I tear them apart, form them into something new. I’m never overly attached to anything I make, but it’s really the process that matters to me and not the outcome. I did like this face painting, though, so I had saved it. I think it has a lot of raw power and emotion, and it was perfect for this month’s challenge.

I had a tag that I had printed with my acrylic paints, the gel plates, and Scribble sticks. I journaled on that and I tucked it behind the drawing on the page.

    Supplies used:

  • Media Journal
  • Dina Wakley Media Acrylic Paint: Night, Fuchsia, Lemon (on the painting), Magenta, Sky (on the tag)

  • We will do two random drawings each month for a prize. We will search the hashtag #showusyourMEdia on Instagram for one winner, and then on Facebook for the second winner. To be clear, you must use the hashtag #showusyourMEdia on either Instagram or Facebook in order to show up in the search and to be eligible to win. You have until the third Wednesday of each month to complete the previous month’s challenge.
  • We will announce the previous month’s winner AND the new challenge on the third Thursday of each month.

  • Note this challenge does not take the place of the monthly challenges we have in the Dina Wakley Media Tribe Facebook group. If you’re not a member of the tribe, please join us! Artists in the group post lots of cool art and inspiration.

Create a piece of art about what you where you have been, or where you want to go. Use the quote as a springboard, and see where it takes you.

I grew up in family that traveled a lot. Now, we’re blessed because my husband works for American Airlines. That means the world is open to us in a way that costs us far less than it would otherwise. My boys have been to 14 countries (so far), and I have been to 18. We love to travel, we love to be together and experience new foods and sights and cultures. This journal page honors that.

Oh my goodness. How did it become April already? Do you have spring fever? I hope you are enjoying these challenges as much as we enjoy seeing your art. Keep it up! Here’s the next prompt:

    #ShowUsYourMEdia | www.rangerink.com

Create a piece of art about what you admire. Is it a grand admiration or is it small and simple? How does what you admire enrich your life?

Lately I have been reflecting on the people who are forces for good in my life. Most of them don’t even know that they are influencing and helping me, but they are. Whenever someone does something thoughtful for me, I always think, “Why aren’t I more like that?” I so admire people who act in kindness.

    Supplies used:

  • Media Journal
  • Dina Wakley Media Acrylic Paint: Lime, Peacock, Eggplant, Evergreen, Black, Marine
  • Dina Wakley Media White Gesso
  • Dina Wakley Media Ultra Thick Gel Medium
  • Dina Wakley Media Scribble Stick Set 2
  • Dina Wakley Media Stamp: Interesting Faces
  • Dina Wakley Media Stencils: Medieval Crosses, Shape Mashup
  • Two #8 tags
  • Dina Wakley Media Cotton Watercolor Paper
  • Dina Wakley Media Paint Brushes
  • Ranger Archival Ink: Jet Black
  • Fudeball Pen: Black
  • I started this page with two mop-up tags. I added the stamped image over them, and cut the hearts from another mop-up tag. I noticed that the tags and hearts were distracting–they were too strong for the stamped image. I dry-brushed White Gesso and over the tags so that my focal point would stand out.

Seeing your work every month is an honor. Truly. Be sure to check the Ranger Ink blog to see if you’re a winner! Remember they draw TWO prize winners every month. Are you ready for March? Here we go…

    #ShowUsYourMEdia | www.rangerink.com

Create a piece of art about resting. Can you slow down? How? How do you rest your soul, your mind, your body? What is the difference between quitting and resting?

As I wrote my journaling on this page, the thought came to me, “Seize the rest.” We have to seize it.

Sometimes rest seems like a luxury and we don’t take enough time to truly take care of ourselves. Lately I’ve been seizing the rest more. By resting, I don’t mean doing nothing. I mean using my free time in ways that are fulfilling. When my depression was really severe, I survived by watching Netflix and lying on my bed. Now that I’m not in the dark abyss like I was, I want to nurture myself better and not be in “survival mode.” I decided to do something that I love to do but haven’t done in years….knitting. I have taken knitting back up with a vengeance and I look forward to my needle time every day. I think it counts as resting because it is rejuvenating and it is a break from my usual routine.

How do you seize your rest? I can’t wait to see your art.
