It’s the middle of May, and it’s time for a new challenge! Keep the awesome art coming. It is a joy to see. Did you know that you can follow a hashtag on Instagram? I have #showusyourmedia set up to follow, so I get to see all the posts come through my feed. Inspiring!

#ShowUsYourMEdia | www.rangerink.com

Create a piece of art about what you where you have been, or where you want to go. Use the quote as a springboard, and see where it takes you.

I grew up in family that traveled a lot. Now, we’re blessed because my husband works for American Airlines. That means the world is open to us in a way that costs us far less than it would otherwise. My boys have been to 14 countries (so far), and I have been to 18. We love to travel, we love to be together and experience new foods and sights and cultures. This journal page honors that.

Oh my goodness. How did it become April already? Do you have spring fever? I hope you are enjoying these challenges as much as we enjoy seeing your art. Keep it up! Here’s the next prompt:

    #ShowUsYourMEdia | www.rangerink.com

Create a piece of art about what you admire. Is it a grand admiration or is it small and simple? How does what you admire enrich your life?

Lately I have been reflecting on the people who are forces for good in my life. Most of them don’t even know that they are influencing and helping me, but they are. Whenever someone does something thoughtful for me, I always think, “Why aren’t I more like that?” I so admire people who act in kindness.

    Supplies used:

  • Media Journal
  • Dina Wakley Media Acrylic Paint: Lime, Peacock, Eggplant, Evergreen, Black, Marine
  • Dina Wakley Media White Gesso
  • Dina Wakley Media Ultra Thick Gel Medium
  • Dina Wakley Media Scribble Stick Set 2
  • Dina Wakley Media Stamp: Interesting Faces
  • Dina Wakley Media Stencils: Medieval Crosses, Shape Mashup
  • Two #8 tags
  • Dina Wakley Media Cotton Watercolor Paper
  • Dina Wakley Media Paint Brushes
  • Ranger Archival Ink: Jet Black
  • Fudeball Pen: Black
  • I started this page with two mop-up tags. I added the stamped image over them, and cut the hearts from another mop-up tag. I noticed that the tags and hearts were distracting–they were too strong for the stamped image. I dry-brushed White Gesso and over the tags so that my focal point would stand out.

    #ShowUsYourMEdia | www.rangerink.com

Create a piece of art about resting. Can you slow down? How? How do you rest your soul, your mind, your body? What is the difference between quitting and resting?

As I wrote my journaling on this page, the thought came to me, “Seize the rest.” We have to seize it.

Sometimes rest seems like a luxury and we don’t take enough time to truly take care of ourselves. Lately I’ve been seizing the rest more. By resting, I don’t mean doing nothing. I mean using my free time in ways that are fulfilling. When my depression was really severe, I survived by watching Netflix and lying on my bed. Now that I’m not in the dark abyss like I was, I want to nurture myself better and not be in “survival mode.” I decided to do something that I love to do but haven’t done in years….knitting. I have taken knitting back up with a vengeance and I look forward to my needle time every day. I think it counts as resting because it is rejuvenating and it is a break from my usual routine.

How do you seize your rest? I can’t wait to see your art.

Create a piece of art about who you want to be. Are you already who you want to be? If not, what can you change in your life to become get there?

I think in many ways I am a late bloomer. Some of my greatest loves in life (art, scuba diving), I discovered in my middle-age. It makes me think about Grandma Moses. She started painting seriously when she was 78. 78!!!! And her work hangs in many museums in the world. See, it really is never too late.

I think I will forever be a work in progress. I never want to stop learning and growing. There’s still so much I want to do. That’s what my two pages are about.

  • Dina Wakley Media Journal
  • Dina Wakley Media Acrylic Paint

Happy January! Are you ready for a new Show Us Your Media challenge! You have until Feb 15 to do show us your artwork. Be sure to review the rules and guidelines below (we’ve updated them for the new year).

    #ShowUsYourMEdia | www.rangerink.com

Create a piece of art about living in the moment. Do you worry too much about the future? Dwell in the past? What little things do you do each day that help you live in the moment?

I tend to be a worrier. I am trying to break myself of over-worrying and over-thinking. I am improving as I age. One part of my personality that helps with this is that I do like to be spontaneous, and I do like change. I tend to get bored easily, so if the moment requires that I do something different, I usually go for it. I also try hard to be grateful. For big things and for small things. I try not to rush through, I try to savor the details of life.

Here’s my page. I took a super ugly page I did and painted over most of it. Is this a great work of art? Nope. Is it a good journal page? Absolutely!

  • Dina Wakley Media Journal
  • Dina Wakley Media Scribble Sticks 2: Ocean, Peacock, Fuchsia, Olive
  • Dina Wakley Media Gesso: Black, White
  • Dina Wakley Media Acrylic Paint: Marine, Medieval, Blushing

Howdy, friends! I know December is a busy month, but you have until January 17th to participate in this challenge. I love this one, it’s a great push for the new year.

    #ShowUsYourMEdia | www.rangerink.com

Create a piece of art about being unstoppable. What are your personal speed bumps that slow you down? How do you triumph over them?

Here’s my page. I did a collage on a burlap page in the Media Journal. I love the texture and dimension! I adhere most items with the Tim Holtz Tiny Attacher so I don’t have to mess with glue on fabric.

    Supplies used:

  • Dina Wakley Media Journal
  • Dina Wakley Media Stamps: Oops, Oh Well, Scribbly Wings
  • Dina Wakley Media Scribble Sticks
  • Dina Wakley Media Acrylic Paint: Night, Ruby, Lemon, Sky, Sterling, Magenta, Black
  • Idea-ology by Tim Holtz Cling Foam Stamps, Block Lower and Tiny Attacher
  • I love digging through my collage papers box to pull out random bits and make collages. This page started with many random pieces. I started layering them and then put the stamped images on top of all of the layers. My tip for creating collages: make sure you have a strong overlap. If you don’t overlap strongly, your collage will feel disconnected and the elements will seem unrelated to each other.

I colored the stamped images from Oops, Oh Well and Scribbly Wings with Scribble Sticks and a bit of acrylic paint, and then I speckled them with Sterling.

I am hard on myself in most areas of my life, EXCEPT for art. In art, I give myself a break. I let myself fail. I let myself make ugly art. I truly don’t care if what I do isn’t good. That makes me unstoppable because I am not holding myself back.

Our next challenge runs from November 16 to December 21, 2017. Here you go….

    #ShowUsYourMEdia | www.rangerink.com

Create a piece of art about happiness. What discoveries have you made about happiness? What makes you happy? What little things, what big things?

    Happiness is… Journal Spread

    Supplies used:

  • Dina Wakley Media Journal
  • Dina Wakley Media Tape
  • Dina Wakley Media Scribble Sticks: Magenta, Turquoise, Lemon
  • Dina Wakley Media Stamps: Circle Patterns, Scribbly Circles
  • Dina Wakley Media Acrylic Paint: Cheddar, Evergreen, Fuchsia, Elephant, Black, Sky
  • Dina Wakley Media Stencil: Spaced Dots
  • Dina Wakley Media Paintbrushes
  • Ranger Archival Ink: Jet Black
  • #5 Tags
  • Fudeball Pen: Black
  • Sewing Machine & Black Thread
  • Idea-ologyby Tim Holtz Tiny Attacher
  • Ranger Multi Medium
  • I started with a canvas page in my Media Journal. I bent the covers back so I could sew lines on the canvas with my machine.

    #ShowUsYourMEdia | www.rangerink.com

Then I colored over the sewing with Magenta and Turquoise Scribble Sticks, and wet them with a paint brush and water. Right into the wet layer I added some Lemon Scribble Stick.

    #ShowUsYourMEdia | www.rangerink.com

When it was dry, I journaled on the stitching with the Fudeball pen. I created the collaged tags with the stamps from the Circle Patterns set. I dug through my “art bits” box and found some tags that I had already painted. I stamped the images on various tags and cut them out. I used Elephant paint on the Scribbly Circles Background stamp to start each tag, then added the stamped images, bits of ephemera, and a little strip of journaling. I put the tags on the canvas with Media Tape, so they can be flipped through like pages in a book. I cut the hearts freehand from painted papers, too, and used Multi Medium to glue them on the tags and onto the canvas.

What makes me happy? Soooo many things. At first, I thought this page might be about simple things, like diet Coke and Kate Spade purses and not setting an alarm in the morning. But as I started my journaling, it became more profound and I couldn’t help but record some BIG things, traveling the world, my faith, and my family.

Create a piece of art about what makes you, YOU. How are you unique? What is your you-ness? What makes you real? Imperfect? Flawed? Quirky? Weird? Beautiful? Magical?

    What I Am Journal Spread

    Supplies used:

  • Dina Wakley Media Journal
  • Dina Wakley Media White Gesso
  • Dina Wakley Media Stamps: Splatter Girl
  • Dina Wakley Media stencil: Scales
  • Dina Wakley Media Paint Brushes
  • Dina Wakley Media Gel Medium
  • Dina Wakley Media Acrylic Paint: Lime, Evergreen, Cheddar, Fuchsia, Ruby, White, Ocean, Magenta, Umber
  • Fudeball Pen: Black
  • Shipping Sticker (Handle with Care Fragile)
  • Dylusions Paint Pen: White Marble
  • Idea-ology by Tim Holtz Tissue Wrap
  • Ranger Archival Ink Pad: Jet Black
  • Stabilo All Pencil: Black
  • I love autobiographical art journaling. For me, examining who I am, how I am feel, why I feel how I feel, and where I want to go in the future is an integral part of what I do.

For this page, I started with a picture of me. I printed it out on my black & white laser printer, cut it out, and used my Gel Medium to glue it onto a watercolor page (pre-coated with gesso, of course). I over-painted the photo loosely. Then I added background colors, painted the flowers, and added journaling.

I think over-painting photos is a great way to practice painting faces. I like to use a dry brush. I keep my paint layers thin so I don’t obscure the image underneath. I follow the photo to paint dark paint in the dark areas and light paint in the light areas. If I paint over something that I want to define better, I use the Stabilo All pencil to outline it and “bring it back” (i.e. nose, mouth, eyes).

I mixed a flesh tone with bits of Cheddar, Magenta, and Ocean. That gave me a pretty brown. Then I added white to lighten it a bit. My favorite shadow color is Umber. It makes fantastic shadows!

    #ShowUsYourMEdia | www.rangerink.com

Create a piece of art about your fears. What are you afraid of? How do you handle your fears? How do you overcome them?

Ah, fears. I try not to live my life in fear of things, but I am a PRO at worrying, and I do sometimes worry about my fears. We all have them, the key is to not let our fears paralyze or define us.  I don’t know what got into me, but I did two two-page spreads for this challenge (I hardly ever do 2-page spreads).

    Fears Journal Spread

    Supplies used:

  • Dina Wakley Media Journal
  • Dina Wakley Media Stamps: Splatter Girl
  • Dina Wakley Media Stencil: Mash Up
  • Dina Wakley Media Paint Brushes
  • Dina Wakley Media Scribble Sticks
  • Dina Wakley Media Acrylic Paint: Black, White, Magenta, Turquoise, Lemon, Cheddar
  • Ranger Mini Ink Blending Tool
  • Idea-ology by Tim Holtz Cling Foam Stamp: Block Upper
  • Fudeball Pen
  • Ranger Multi Medium
  • This page is about my artistic fears. I firmly believe that quality art is correlated to the quantity of art you make, and I am living proof that ANYONE can be an artist. I do sometimes worry that I’m not good, though, that I’m a giant art poser. Ha. Don’t we all feel that way a bit?

I started this page by loading up the Splatter Girl stamp with various colors of paint, and stamping her directly onto the watercolor pages in my journal (no gesso first, can you believe it?). Then I painted free-hand silhouettes around the stamped images so the faces would be visible through the figures. I stamped the words with Tim’s Cling Foam alphabet stamps and my White acrylic paint. I used the black Scribble stick to outline the abstract figures and the Fudeball pen was perfect for the journaling, once the paint was all dry.

    Splatter Girl Spread

    Supplies used:

  • Dina Wakley Media Journal
  • Dina Wakley Media Stamps: Splatter Girl, Text and Scribbles
  • Dina Wakley Media Stencil: Shape Mashup, Swirling Dashes
  • Dina Wakley Media White Gesso
  • Dina Wakley Media Gel Medium
  • Dina Wakley Media Paintbrushes
  • Dina Wakley Media Scribble Sticks
  • Dina Wakley Media Acrylic Paint: Black, White, Magenta, Turquoise, Lemon, Cheddar, Medieval, Elephant
  • Ranger Mini Ink Blending Tool
  • Idea-ology by Tim Holtz Cling Tissue Wrap, Plain
  • Fudeball Pen
  • Ranger Multi Medium
  • This page started with a concept, “Invisibility.” I wanted to stamp the girl so that she got lighter and lighter with each iteration. Can you tell the colors change as the images spread across the page? This page is how I don’t want to be invisible, how I want to make a difference.

I started this page with loosely-painted colors on pre-gesso’d watercolor pages in my journal. While the backgrounds dried, I took a large piece of Tissue Wrap and stamped Splatter Girl on it with varying colors of acrylic paint (Black, Night, Medieval, and Elephant). When all the paint dried, I used my Gel Medium to glue the stamped Tissue Wrap onto the page. Then I added additional stenciling and some journaling with the Fudeball pen. I stamped the circle from Text and Scribbles with Black acrylic paint onto a painted piece of paper that was in my “art bits” box. I throw unfinished/ugly pieces and warmups into that box and use them as collage papers. They come in handy. I cut the circles out and glued them over the whole spread.

Here is our next challenge. It runs from August 17 to Sept 20, 2017.

You can’t wait for inspiration. You have to go after it with a club. ~Jack London
Inspiration exists, but it has to find you working. ~Pablo Picasso

Create a piece of art about what inspires you. Do you purposely seek inspiration, or do you let it come to you organically? What do you do when you’re not feeling inspired?

As I thought about this challenge, I realized there’s no one source of inspiration for me. I get inspiration from color, from nature, from other people’s art, from design, from patterns….everything is fair game and might set me off on a creative path. The key is living so that you notice what is around you!

My family and I just got back from a trip to Tokyo, Japan. We had a fabulous time, and wow, I came home feeling inspired! One of the many beautiful sights we saw was this huge field of water lilies in Ueno park. We gasped when we saw them. The flowers were enormous, about 8″ across, or bigger. The lilies covered an incredible amount of area. Stunning!

    #ShowUsYourMEdia | www.rangerink.com

    #ShowUsYourMEdia | www.rangerink.com

These lilies were on my mind when I started this challenge. Painting flowers has been popular in mixed media for awhile, and I always wanted to try it, but never felt moved to do it. After seeing the flowers in Japan, I knew I had to paint them! I did two pages in my journal. The first page, on the watercolor paper in the Dina Wakley Media journal, is directly inspired by the lilies. The second page, on a burlap page in the journal, was just an experiment to see what would happen if I painted flowers on it. I enjoyed playing so much that I even made two larger flower paintings, inspired by my journal pages!

    Supplies used:

  • Dina Wakley Media Journal
  • Dina Wakley Media Acrylic Paint in Lemon, Cheddar, White, Fuchsia, Night, Sky, Blush, Turquoise, Lime, Evergreen, Black
  • Dina Wakley Media Paint Brushes
